Tsetar Ritual on Saga Dawa New Moon

On the last day of Saga Dawa, during the new moon, Ga Lhakhang Rinpoche will perform the Tsetar practice — the releasing of fish lives.

The Tsetar ritual, or life-release, is considered a powerful practice for accumulating merit and removing obstacles. According to the teachings, it bestows longevity, robust health, and purifies negative karma arising from causing harm to other beings.

Everyone who wishes to participate can contribute funds for the redemption of fish and provide the names of their loved ones. The sole condition: everyone whose name is submitted must promise never to consume fish in this lifetime. If you cannot give up eating fish but want to participate in releasing the fish, then you can send money but do not write names.

“The greatest benefit from life release is gained by those who kill and eat other beings. Consider, what do you most enjoy eating? Be it chicken, fish, lamb, or something else — these are precisely the beings that should be released. Why? Because by performing this act, you grant freedom from death specifically to these creatures. At the same time, you must make a firm commitment that you will never again consume them in your life. Without such a sincere promise, the ritual loses all meaning. To simply release and then return to consumption is pointless.

Indeed, the true purpose of life release is rooted in the pursuit of longevity. If you constantly take other lives for food, how can you expect your own life to be long? It’s impossible. The main benefit of life release is the increase of one’s own lifespan and freedom from all diseases. This ritual has a powerful purifying effect on health. After all, how can we, humans, live a long life if we are constantly sick? A long life is directly linked to the absence of illness. If you are constantly ill, your life will shorten.

Therefore, if you wish to join, please provide me with the names of those who are doing so. But it’s important that these individuals promise not to consume the released being. This applies not only to you. There’s no need to give the names of all your family members — husband, wife, children — if they will continue to eat these products. Only those who sincerely wish to participate — grandfathers, grandmothers, fathers, mothers, children — and are prepared to make such a promise should be named. Only their names, not the names of the entire family.” — Ga Lhakhang Rinpoche.

The Tsetar will be held on the morning of June 25 (new moon). Rinpoche plans to broadcast it on our Facebook group. We will publish the time later.
