Fire is a metaphor for Agni, the deity of fire, known as Melha in Tibetan. It symbolizes the burning away of negativity, spiritual impurities, and attachments that hinder spiritual progress. Fire rituals are performed to remove spiritual, physical, and psychological barriers on the path to enlightenment. Various symbolic items, including grains, herbs (such as derva grass), butter, and even prayers written on paper, are offered to the fire.
